Probably no professional lash artist wants a client to leave her salon with unnatural looking lashes. She might as well tape her eyelashes to a drugstore tape at home.
But how do you make false eyelashes indistinguishable from real ones? It's a little secret of mine, but I'm happy to share my tips for a natural lash look with you.
Every face is different
The basis for success in applying false eyelashes is not only the skillful hands of the lash artist, but also a perfect knowledge of the typology of the face. Each of us looks different and each of us can look completely different.
But it's not just about the shape of the face. For lash styling, the eyes are the most important. They can be convex, round, elongated or even too close together. But with the right type of lashes, even bland eyes can pop out nicely. This is also why we must approach each lash application individually and with the utmost care.
In the pictures below, you will find tips on how you can beautifully enhance your client's eyes just by choosing the right false eyelashes and the right lash application technique.
Lash mapping takes you to your destination
Lash maps can be used to enhance your client's natural beauty. This is actually a process of breaking the lash line into smaller sections, which you can fill with false eyelashes of different lengths. To give you an idea, you can see an infographic with the most common types of styling.
Volume makes an impression - or does it?
When choosing lashes for a natural look, you need to keep an eye on several parameters. The type of eyelashes we choose is always based on the client's lashes, and it's good to take her overall look into consideration.
More expressive types of women with dark hair, thicker eyebrows and thick natural lashes can afford to apply thicker sets with a strong curl (4D to 5D ). For more delicate types with fair skin and fine natural lashes, we should opt for 3D fans or rely on the lash-to-lash method for the most natural look.
When it comes to lash thickness, we go by what the client's lashes can take, but we prefer to keep it simple. If the natural lashes are thick and in good shape, we can also reach for slightly thicker lashes or fans. For clients with thin natural lashes, we apply lightweight and thin lashes that won't weigh them down too much. However, for the maximum natural look, keep the fans between 0.03 mm and 0.05 mm.
The golden rule for a beautiful job is - Try to fit the maximum number of lashes, even small growing "baby" lashes. If you only apply the false lashes to fully grown natural lashes, you may find that in no time at all, these lashes and the false lashes will fall out. The client will return for refills after two weeks with really noticeable gaps, for which she will not praise you.

Beauty is in the details
Naturalness also lies in a certain roughness. Because even natural lashes don't line up like a ruler. So create sexy textured lash sets where the rays are 2-3mm longer than the rest of the lashes. This creates an interesting, very natural, sexy look that your clients will love.

Tip from pracitice: Clients sometimes come in with a very peculiar idea of what their new lashes should look like. Our job is to discuss all the options with them and advise them on what will suit them and what they should rather forget. It's up to you how bold creations you go for, but trust me, you'll get a much better reputation with a well executed natural lash styling than with an eyelash application that will make your client look like a character from a cheesy horror movie. After all, the job of a skilled lash artist is not just to "slap" material on the eye, but to be able to listen, advise and recommend what is best for the person.
I wish you the best of luck in choosing lashes for your clients and the desire to continually improve your lash styling. Fingers crossed and don't forget that I share more tips and tricks for lash artists on my Facebook or Instagram.
