Eyelashes are the frame to the window to the soul, i.e. to our eye. All you have to do is bat your eyelashes at the right moment and the whole world is at your feet. But what to do if your eyelashes suddenly start falling out?

Eyelashes are one of the dominant features of the face and catch the eye at first glance. Even if they're light, barely visible or thin, they can work wonders with well-executed eyelash extensions.

If a client has confided in you that her false eyelashes have started to fall out sooner than she is used to or that her natural lashes are falling out, you need to find out the cause. And that's before you embark on a new extensions journey together!

Practice Tip: When working as a lash artist, it's not just about gluing on false eyelashes, but we should also be able to advise and help clients who are dealing with eyelash issues. None of us would likely start to work on eyelashes that are not in good shape at first glance and that start to fall out during application. Therefore, to understand the complexity of the eyelash fallout issue, it's best to start from the beginning...

First, a little theory...

The average person has approximately 400 eyelashes on the upper and lower eyelids combined, and the natural daily loss should range from one to five eyelashes.

This amount is perfectly normal and is nothing to be concerned about. So you can assure your client that if she loses 1-5 fans a day, including natural lashes, it is perfectly natural. Despite the fairly widespread rumor that eyelashes don't grow back, they have the ability to fully regenerate just like hair or body hair.

It takes approximately 2 months for a new eyelash to grow to its normal size. According to some sources, you could build a 2.8km-long strip of eyelashes that fall out in your lifetime, so if you find an eyelash on your face that has fallen out now and then, there's no need to panic.

So let's take a look at what's most often behind excessive eyelash loss:

What causes excessive natural eyelash fallout?

Natural eyelashes, like hair and body hair, are affected by a variety of factors. The less serious reasons that can be easily resolved include the following:

  •     Long-term stress - stress has a negative effect on the entire human body, and in addition to eyelash loss, hair loss, lack of appetite, headaches and other unpleasant symptoms can plague you when you are under long-term stress. Look for the source of the stress and try to work on relieving it. Get a massage, go to the pool, practice yoga or go for a run in the woods. Even a small lifestyle change can make a difference to your mood, your health and the beauty of your lashes.
  •     Unbalanced diet - just like stress, eating poorly is a daily occurrence that can take a toll on you. It's far from just about the perfect swimsuit figure that we probably all crave. A properly composed diet brings with it a multitude of benefits and its effect on our overall appearance is not negligible.

Practical Tip: For beautiful eyelashes and hair and to feel better, I recommend including plenty of protein, fruits and vegetables in your diet. Vitamin H (biotin), which you can find in sardines, pecans, bananas or whole grain bread, has a big impact on eyelash growth and condition.

Other essential elements are vitamins C and E, which are effective antioxidants. Thanks to them, the eyelash follicles will be defended against free radicals, which can play a part in hair loss.

  • The use of poor quality cosmetics and careless make-up removal - when caring for eyelashes, less is almost always more. For healthy and long lashes, avoid using poor quality cosmetics and also don't overdo it with mascara. Not only will it weigh down the lashes, but especially when you exfoliate with force, the lashes can suffer trauma and simply fall out.
  • The same goes for curling your lashes with eyelash curlers and heated eyelash curlers. If you want thick, quality lashes, then avoid these tools!

  •  Natural cycling - you may of course also find that just as your pets, for example, go through a period of shedding in spring and autumn, you may find more lashes falling out at the same time. This is normal and perfectly natural.

When should you pay attention?

None of the above applies to you, but you're still nervous about eyelashes falling out? Then maybe the cause is a little more serious and it doesn't hurt to talk to your doctor about the problem.

Hormonal imbalances caused by an improper thyroid function or menopause, for example, can be to blame for a larger loss, but so can more serious diseases such as psoriasis, alopecia, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma or lupus. Rarely, eyelash loss can also turn out to be a symptom of skin cancer.

If, in addition to unusual loss of eyelashes may also be an unwanted side effect of one of the medications you take regularly. Even in these cases, a visit to the doctor is necessary.yelash loss, you are also suffering from itching, swelling of the eyelid and burning, it may be due to blepharitis, an inflammation caused by blockage of the sebaceous glands.

Unusual loss of eyelashes may also be an unwanted side effect of one of the medications you take regularly. Even in these cases, a visit to the doctor is necessary.

A lash is falling, make a wish!

In the paragraphs above, we have summarized what happens when natural eyelashes fall out, now we will try to get to the bottom of what happens when false eyelashes fall out.

The first thing to check is whether the false eyelashes are falling out with the natural eyelashes or if they are coming loose on their own.

If it is the former, it may be one of the manifestations described above or the lash artist did not choose the appropriate type of fan for the extension considering the strength of your natural lashes. Natural eyelashes (especially if they are fine and thin) may not be able to bear excessive load and therefore may break or fall out.

Practical tip: If you have a client who has fine lashes and wants really big volume, it is much better to use 100% natural lashes and also use lighter fans (3D or 4D).

Yes, it will take longer, but believe me, the result will be worth it and the time that such highlighted lashes will last will really surprise you!

Finally, it remains to explain to the client how she suddenly finds fallen false eyelashes just a few days after leaving your studio with fabulous new lashes.

There are most often 3 reasons for the loss of false eyelashes:

  • Dirt on the eyelashes - in order for the artificial eyelash or fan to adhere perfectly to the natural eyelash, it is necessary that the surface of the eyelash is perfectly cleaned and degreased. If not enough attention is paid to the preparation of the lashes before application, the lifespan of the applied lashes is much shorter. The same applies if the client uses any oil-based cosmetic products after application. Whether it is mascara, micellar water or make-up remover, these products have no place near the false eyelashes.

Always educate your client about what cosmetics to use after eyelash extensions and how to clean her lashes properly and gently without making them fall out right away, and don't be afraid to remind her from time to time, even if she comes to you regularly. For eyelash care, you can recommend, for example, the new Lashes PRO Eyelash Cleansing Foam.

Steam exposure - humidity and higher temperatures don't make good friends with false lashes, as we lashes know all too well, but clients often (and like to) forget that. If you want the result of your hard work to last as long as possible, always remind your client that she will have to forgo the pool, sauna or hot shower in the first few days after application.

Improper handling of the adhesive - several problems can arise when working with adhesive that can shorten the life of the lashes. You can learn about how to handle the glue to ensure that the time the lashes stay in place is as long as possible in my blog post Artificial lashes that stick - 5 principles for working with glue.
